For home theatre enthusiasts, the Onkyo brand has always been ahead of the game. Whenever DTS, THX, Audyssey or Dolby Labs announce a new release or calibration system, Onkyo is practically guaranteed to add it to their next release.
Sure enough, the new "09" series Okyo AV Receivers (which recently made it to Australia) includes the likes of networking, USB support and, of course, 3D.
The new range includes:
TX-SR309 (AU$599)TX-NR509 (AU$799)TX-NR579 (AU$999)TX-NR609 (AU$1399)TX-NR709 (AU$1499)TX-NR809 (AU$2199)Moving even further up the range, we have the TX-NR1009, TX-NR3009 and TX-NR5009.
Rather than singling out one particular model, we'll be looking at the new features they all have in common: Networking, 3D and USB Playback.
Networking
Love it or loathe it, networking is gradually becoming a fixture in our daily lives. Thankfully, home theatre networking it's no longer the hassle it once was. If you're within reach of an Ethernet wall socket, you're off to a great start. Simply use an Ethernet cable to connect it to the A/V receiver's Ethernet port and you'll be off!
Alternatively, you can use your power line to network. This is known as Power Over Ethernet (PoE). Look out for a Power Line AV Adapter Kit at your nearest electronics store
3D Compatibilty
Personally, the Home Theatre Butler team does not recommend purchases based solely on 3D playback. As much as we enjoy the novelty, the core criteria in making an informed decision should always be based on regular 2D picture performance.
Happily, the best TVs currently on the market also happen to offer great 3D capability. And consequently, more and more A/V receivers are supporting this feature. Anything from Onkyo's 2011 range onward will be compatible.
USB Playback
We've now reached the point where it would be embarrassing for an AV receiver not to include USB inputs. Why? USB provides direct media access, whether through a USB drive, MP3 player, iPhone, iPad or other storage device.
The Verdict
Years ago, when I worked at a home theatre retail store, I frequently found myself explaining the difference between different AV receivers to customers. Other brands bragged at higher wattage and cheaper prices, but it only ever took one demonstration for the customer to walk away with the Onkyo.
If you take your home theatre performacne seriously, rest assured Onkyo has not detoured from its brilliant build quality and great home theatre performance.
